Organizational Note

The Urban League of Metropolitan Denver (the League) was founded in 1946 for the purpose of promoting the attainment of economic and social self-reliance among poor and disadvantaged African Americans.

Since 1946 the League has worked aggressively to create a level playing field for African Americans and others of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.  Today, the Urban League is implementing innovative programs to prepare our constituents for the new millennium.

As one of 107 affiliates of the National Urban League, the agency serves as a liaison between the business community, city and county governments and other community-based organizations that share its concern for the welfare of the economically disadvantaged in Denver.

The League is successful in providing families with effective youth programming and employment services with no or minimal cost associated.

The organizational records of the Urban League of Denver are divided into four series. They include papers, newspaper articles and marketing materials, photographs, and scrapbooks. The first series, papers, consists of correspondence, memos, reports, invitations, cards, notes, and general records. They are then divided into three subseries: correspondence, invitations, and notes. They are arranged chronologically.

The second series, newspaper articles and marketing materials, consists of newspaper articles, miscellaneous publications, brochures, booklets, pamphlets, and programs. They are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically.

The third series, photographs, is arranged chronologically and includes many photographs of the club, individual people and events. The fourth series, scrapbooks, consists of two scrapbooks. The first includes many photographs and articles. It is entitled "Facets of Negro Culture." An unknown compiler placed many annotations in the “Facets of Negro Culture” scrapbook. The second scrapbook is smaller in size and contains only newspaper articles from the 1940s-1950s.
